(CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA) – On Friday, April 8, His Excellency Martin Weiss, Ambassador of Austria to the United States, will speak as a part of the Ambassador Series hosted by the UVA Center for Politics in partnership with the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, UVA Global Affairs, the Center for German Studies, the Jewish Studies Program, the European Studies Program, the Virginia Center for the Study of Religion, and the UVA Department of Germanic Languages and Literature. This event is in association with the State as Experiment symposium taking place at UVA from April 6-8, 2022.
Weiss will be the first current Ambassador to speak on the Grounds of the University of Virginia following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He will participate in a dialogue with UVA Center for Politics Director of Global Initiatives Daman Irby on this topic as well as other subjects connected to the Transatlantic relationship and concerns impacting Austria. A significant portion of the event will be dedicated to audience Q&A. UVA Vice Provost for Global Affairs, Ambassador Stephen Mull, will introduce Weiss.
This in-person event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, April 8 on the grounds of the University of Virginia in the Great Hall of Garrett Hall. Those who would like to attend may register via this Eventbrite link. Members of the media are welcome.
Weiss was sworn in as Ambassador to the U.S. in November 2019. Prior to this posting, he served as Austria’s Ambassador to Israel, Ambassador to Cyprus, and in numerous other roles in the Austrian Foreign Service going back to 1990.
This Ambassador Series event is coordinated by the UVA Center for Politics’ Global Perspectives on Democracy (GPD) program, which fosters dialogue between the United States and other countries through public events and international exchanges. Weiss is the 30th ambassador to participate in this series.
