(CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA) – On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the University of Virginia Center for Politics’ Global Perspectives on Democracy program will host an Ambassador Series event with His Excellency Juan Gabriel Valdés, Ambassador of Chile to the United States.
Ambassador Valdés will participate in a dialogue with Chile scholar and UVA Professor of History Thomas Klubock. The event will focus on the relationship between Chile and the U.S., Chile’s recent constitutional referendum, and other issues impacting Chile and the region. Center for Politics Director of Global Initiatives Daman Irby will introduce the Ambassador and moderate the Q&A portion of the event.

His Excellency Juan Gabriel Valdés was sworn in most recently as Ambassador to the U.S. in spring 2022 and previously served as Ambassador to the U.S. from 2014 to 2018. In addition to Ambassador to the U.S., he has served as Chile’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the U.N. and Minister of Foreign Affairs, among other positions. He was a visiting professor at Columbia University in New York, Sorbonne in Paris, and served as Director of Institutional and Strategic Affairs at the University of Chile in Santiago.
This Ambassador Series event is coordinated by the UVA Center for Politics’ Global Perspectives on Democracy (GPD) program, which fosters dialogue between the United States and other countries through public events and international exchanges. Valdés is the 34th ambassador to participate in this series.
