(CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.) – On Wednesday, Oct. 27, the University of Virginia Center for Politics Global Perspectives on Democracy program will kick off the virtual International Forum on Diplomacy. The Forum will continue through Oct. 30 and include three special events.
His Excellency Motaz Zahran, Ambassador of Egypt to the U.S., will speak from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, about his country’s relationship to the United States, challenges within Egypt and the region, and the Middle East peace process. Daman Irby, UVA Center for Politics Director of Global Initiatives, will serve as moderator. Ambassador Roya Rahmani, former Ambassador of Afghanistan to the U.S., will participate in a dialogue from 4-5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, on the past, present, and future of Afghanistan, including the return of the Taliban, the current status of women and girls, and the nation’s relationship with the United States. Ambassador Rahmani was the first female Ambassador of Afghanistan to the U.S. and served in that role until July 2021. News, Propaganda, and Diplomacy, a conference hosted by the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello, the American Academy of Diplomacy, and the UVA Center for Politics will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 9:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. The rapid evolution of technology has drastically changed the ways in which information is developed, shared, and consumed. How does this new landscape impact foreign policy and public diplomacy? What is the role of journalists and diplomats in addressing these challenges? Guest speakers include David D. Pearce, former U.S. Ambassador to Algeria and Greece and chief correspondent for the UPI; Glyn Davies, three-time ambassador and former executive director of the National Security Council; Carol Giacomo, former diplomatic correspondent for Reuters in Washington and member of the New York Times editorial board from 2007-2020; and Nick Schifrin, foreign correspondent for PBS NewsHour.
